I was hoping somebody would be able to help with a translation. The sword was owned by my Japanese grandfather. Unfortunately no one knows the history of the sword and he is not here to ask.

I think I have most of the mei translated, but am stuck on a few charaters. I see:

Mutsu ?? ?? Ju Fujiwara Kunikane.

Any help with the translation and any ideas on the age of the sword would be appreciated.

Thanks for the help.

Mike

Thanks Chris. My knowledge of swords consists of what I have read in the last week or so. If the mei looks suspect to you, what types of things would you look at next to help determine the authenticity of the sword?

Have a look first at your blade, does the work fits Kunikane's?

You cannot escape it, it is the base to learn. Kunikane is well known for reviving masame, does your blade is in masame (straight folding lines)? that would be an indication
