andreYes Posted June 30, 2010 Report Posted June 30, 2010 I'm trying to clarify the terminology of tsuba edge. I'd like to understand where is the border between maru mimi and kaku mimi koniku? On the following picture the (1) in obviously kaku, (2) - maru, (3) - kaku koniku. And what about the (4) and (5)? Sorry if the question is stupid Quote
Ford Hallam Posted June 30, 2010 Report Posted June 30, 2010 These labels are merely conveniences conceived of by collectors so that items may be accurately described in words. As such there will always be some blurring where one shape transitions into another. No 1 is such an extreme example I would suggest it's not accurate at all in terms of tsuba. I'd say that No 5 is a more realistic kaku-mimi. As for the rest, it's all a matter of degree and relativity, except for No 2 which is clearly maru-mimi :D Quote
sanjuro Posted June 30, 2010 Report Posted June 30, 2010 Not a stupid question at all. First I would suggest a better source of reference. The Japanese sword index has a more comprehensive and realistic article. I would agree with Ford also in that the example (1) in your post is a ridiculous extreme of a square edge. No real tsuba would have such a mimi. Likewise with example (3). The rest are a matter of degree. Quote
