Hi All,

A sword i picked up a little while ago I think if my translation is correct it's attributed to Sukehiro on the sayagaki and then the measurements of the sword. i've attached a few shots of the nakago in different lights and a couple of the sword itself. I was wondering if people had opinions on this?

It was quite hard to pick up the date signature, it looks a lot better in person, very fine chisel. in the photos looks quite scratchy

i've seen a lot of different styles of mei attributed to Sukehiro, seems it changed a lot over his career

From what I recall he used two distinct styles, so called kaku Tsuda or square and maru Tsuda or rounded.  Clearly the sword in question is from the kaku Tsuda period if that helps at all.  Some more information here, https://www.sho-shin.com/osaka-tsuda.html

Dear Tony,

 

It's a hybrid signature, with mei in kaku and nengo in sosho. The change from one style to the other wasn't immediate; there was a transition period in which the mei continued to be kaku with the addition of the kanji Tsuda (Family name) and the nengo in sosho. I can't read the nengo, but the reference period for the hybrid mei should be from 1668 to 1674, if I remember correctly.
Compared to the blade, when the hamon is suguha, Sukehiro always tends to have variations in height, it's never completely uniform, as you can see in the oshigata posted by Uwe.

Although Sukehiro's signature style has evolved over time, there are certain constants, especially in the kaisho style. Unfortunately, this blade is gimei.
