Authentic Wakizashi or fake?

Hello everyone,

After purchasing my Kyu Gunto, I came across this Wakizashi on polish auction website. I know that even if its real Nihonto, it isn't worth much as blade is in bad condition, but market for Japanese swords isnt great here. Also, I'd prefer to start collection with something inexpensive, rather than jumping head first and spending few thousands ;)

It is described as Wakizashi from Edo period, blade length: 44cm, overall length 66cm.

Best regards,

Jakub

I wouldn't suggest you to buy this. I this constitution you can't enjoy it, and for a restoration you must also pay some thousands.

I recommend you the sale section here, there are some blades for sale and if it is from EU, you don't have to pay customs.

Best Regards

Thanks. I appreciate the advice. I did check the sale section, and indeed there are a lot of beautiful blades up for sale. But 2,5k - 3k euro seems a bit too steep entry point for me. I know that from serious collectors standpoint, this Wakizashi is basically scrap, but I personally don't mind its condition. I primarily collect blackpowder guns, and for those pitting isn't anything unusual ;)

So why you ask in this board? You can also find a Tanto for 1k-2k Euro. What is your price limit? And yes Nihonto isn't a cheap hobby, but also you don´t have to be a millionaire. You can also have a look in Tosugu, a nice Tsuba is also very beautiful. Or maybe start to invest in some books. Or invest in a trip to Utrecht to the Japanartfair to get an overview of Nihonto.

I asked because I wanted to know if it's real Nihonto. If this was wrong board then I am sorry.

Well, then I'd expect answer 'it's impossible to tell from those pictures' and that's still would be helpful. So, thanks for your response.

Hey Jakub -  The answer to your question, IMO, is it looks like it's genuine. As mentioned, the picture doesn't allow for the close examination of any detail, which may have been purposeful on their part. However, If you really like the blade in its current condition and can pick it up for a small amount, go for it. All that said, you can find blades in much better condition that can be. had for a relatively low price if you stay on the hunt. There have been some pretty good deals that have sold here in the last couple months, so you never know what will pop up.

Thanks Oli, thanks Hokke. I don't plan to bid on it if price goes up too much. As to pictures quality, would better photos help? In case I get it, because of law here, I have return window of 14 days without any reason. So I'd be able to take as many photos as I want.

If you have genuine interest in this blade, then yes, get some better pictures. with close-ups. Try to take them on a darker background.  Just know that it can sometimes take a bit for members here to stop by and give their opinions.
