I would say the minty general condition could explain why the final price is so high. But I will never understand why people can spend so much money in a machine-made sword. For this price or even a bit less you can buy a fair gendaito or mantetsuto.Still a mistery for me....

Bruno, it was in good condition, but its almost an insult to see whats basically an over sized letter opener going for more than a handmade blade. I have been seeing a lot of nco swords lately selling for huge amounts also. I was just wondering if there was something rare or special with this particular one that I was missing.

I do not think you have missed anything about it. It has nothing particular to me except its good condition. It is a good piece for a military collector but not for nihonto collectors.IMHO :)

I think the reason for the high price was the fact it was an early example with the suya stamp, matching numbers, and in good nick. I have a early one with the brass tsuba in same condition and a military collector offered me 950 euros. look at coins one penny might be only worth that, another with a certain date could be worth hundreds.

Tom and Brian, your absolutely right, and I did not mean to insult any collectors, I was just shocked, but that particular sword was in incredible condition. Tom, I did not notice the stamp before, I will know what to look for in the future.

Eric im sure you did'nt offend anyone. If you look at the excellent new forum military swords of imperial Japan you will see a member paid 3500 for an nco. It makes the one on ebay look like a bargain

You certainly didn't insult any collectors, I wouldn't give you 10 cents for some of the modern art floating around! Collectors as a group are a little odd in general and collectors of weapons often have more to make people wonder about them than any others ! On some level, regardless of the true value of some nihonto JUST fact that people over the last 3, 4 or 5 hundred years kept them is amazing. Not many folks have anything that has been aroung half a century - better than MacDonald's toys or PEZ dispensers :rotfl:

Brian, I also am amazed at how long certain delicate items have survived, when you hold it in your hand and think that someone actually used it and it survived for so long, what do we have today that will last that long and be collected? People sometimes cant figure out why I collect some of the things I have laying around so I shouldnt talk.
