BIG Posted November 14, 2024 Report Posted November 14, 2024 https://www.zacke.at...&sd=0&pp=48&pn=3&g=1 The zutsu houses the katana in its koshirae. The zutsu is stored like a tachi on a tachi kake. You need only little space and the zutsu looks like a nice safe. I do not have any zutsu experience.. what is your opinion.. Quote
Rivkin Posted November 14, 2024 Report Posted November 14, 2024 Judging by the shade of yellow on this item its Taisho or early Showa and not the first grade product, which is often dangerous because the wood quality is a bit random and there can be issues. Otherwise, they are neat items. Usually black lacquer with something like a mon in gold or other simple decoration. I prefer sword boxes because they are often older, have descriptions, some are high class lacquer. 1 Quote

Marcin Posted April 25 Report Posted April 25 I would like to get Your opinion on this Zutsu. https://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/229587708_rare-and-fine-Japanese-edo-period-zutsu-a-samurai-katana-sword-storage-case-in-fine-lacquer-finish-carrollton-tx This looks like having lacquer inside so there shouldn't be issues with wood moisture? Of course visible crack will be dealt with. I bought it for gunto, I know - different nengou but I already had matching mon at T98. If anyone have some additional info about zutsu in general please share here. 1 Quote
Geraint Posted April 27 Report Posted April 27 Dear Marcin. While I can understand the sense of connection with the mon I would ne very cautious about pairing this zutsu with a shingunto. The metal saya and fitings of the shingunto are almost bound to do damage to the zutsu which is quite a rare thing and should be preserved. Indeed you may find that the shingunto koshirae does not fit as most zutsu taper down after the tsuba space and do not allow for hangers on the saya. A lovely thing to own and perhaps to display alongside the shingunto? All the best. 1 Quote

Metal rims visible on pics were added as some kind of repair, reinforcement. There is also long time before this blade will be polished and evaluated. Edited April 27 by Rawa 1 Quote
