Gordon Sanders Posted February 1, 2016 Report Posted February 1, 2016 Hi guys I have menuki that this kozuka will be a great match with but something looks odd about it Like it was colored black on the front with a marker? Or am I looking way too close Quote
Geraint Posted February 1, 2016 Report Posted February 1, 2016 Dear Gordon. If I was to hazard a guess I would say that this is a pressed kodzuka. These are usually dismissed and seem to have been made for Western markets. Tell tale signs are, rather blurred details, erratic gilding, no undercuts, no sign of inlay. The give a way would be a shot of the mouth where it is usually possible to see that the plate is very thin. Colour is always tricky with images but the brown toning might suggest patinated copper rather than shakudo. Hope this helps. All the best. 1 Quote

Gordon Sanders Posted February 1, 2016 Author Report Posted February 1, 2016 Looking at all of his items on this page makes me think it is pressed and not carved http://www.messer-spezial.de/kozuka.htm Quote
