I recently deciphered the last three characters on a katana shortened to a wakizashi as "Kuni Shu Ju". The remainder of the signature was lost as the sword was shortened. I know "Ju" means resident of, but "Kuni Shu" does not seem correct. Any comments would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Bill

伊州國 = Ishu no Kuni

Seems thats what they were going for but got the Kanji the wrong way round? You never know if they were illiterate or it's a very bad Gimei.

Bill,

That is a very unusual and strange mei. I would think it to be spurious unless someone can come up with some other explanation.
