Jock Posted August 20, 2007 Report Posted August 20, 2007 Hi Folks, I know this might sound stupid....but I still have to ask the question: "What is the difference between a Wak and a katana?" Jock Quote
Darcy Posted August 20, 2007 Report Posted August 20, 2007 Primarily it is the length of the sword. Roughly tanto < 30cm < wakizashi < 60cm < katana In usage, the wakizashi is generally one handed where a katana may be one or two. You also use the wakizashi for seppuku, and you keep it with you when you put your katana on the sword rack. It is of a size to be more useful in tight situations (like indoor fighting), and is the second component of the daisho which is the hallmark of the samurai class. It was legal for non-samurai classes to use, so is made frequently in the Edo period. Quote
Jock Posted August 21, 2007 Author Report Posted August 21, 2007 Hi Darcy, I thought it would be related to the length.....thanks for clarifying this for me! Appreciate your helpful advise - as always! Regards, Jock Quote
