Recently I have purchased a nice late Edo katana with what appears to be the original mountings. I noticed that the Ito wrap looked like it was worn from the years of use, so I sent the Tsuka to an expert to have it re-wrapped with new Japanese silk.

The expert evaluated the Tsuka and said that it could possibly de-value the katana, because it appeared that the wrap was the original from the 1800's. He let me know that it is a tough call to have it re-wrapped.

Wanted to get the members thoughts on this?

Thank you

This is a quote from your 'expert', so from whom would you like a contrary answer? He could make money out of you and re-wrap, but his advice stands him high in my estimation. Its a no brainer, if it aint broke don't fix it. Tell us all who he is, he is a diamond.

No problem, his name is David McDonald. I found him through this message board and I agree with your assessment. We were both on the fence about it and agree we would reach out to the message board about the topic.
