svarsh Posted March 8, 2014 Report Posted March 8, 2014 There is a signed tsuba, however it's hard to read the characters and I don't know the meaning anyway. Help will be much appreciated. Also, I have never seen a tsuba like this before (I am a novice), and will be happy to learn from the members regarding the time, school and possibly maker. Thanks in avance, Sergei Quote
Brian Posted March 9, 2014 Report Posted March 9, 2014 Is Santa on the other side? Sorry, couldn't resist. This does not appear to be a traditionally made old tsuba. It looks to me like either amateur hobby work, or a Western interpretation of a tsuba. One only has to look at the depiction of the deer to see that they aren't done to a Japanese aesthetic. Still....it was a lot of work involved. It is a lot better than most Chinese fakes, and easy for a beginner to mistake it for an antique. If you didn't pay a lot for it, it is an interesting trinket that may or may not have been on a sword. Not sure if the signature would be genuine by the novice, or added later. Maybe it does have some age, and just done by an amateur learning the art. Brian Quote
svarsh Posted March 10, 2014 Author Report Posted March 10, 2014 Thanks Brian, I did not buy it yet, just considering. Your comment makes me think that I may not wish to purchase it. Sergei Quote
