Who were the best Tamba smiths?, a friend has just acquired a Wakizashi signed "Tamba no kami Yoshi michi", I had a beutifully silver mounted Tanto some years ago when it appeared they were not so well rated.

What is the guideline to the best and worst {if any}?

I have seen very good work from the shodai Yoshimichi, several of which are Juyo Token

I have a shodai Kanemichi that is spectacular (IMHO). It is in Japan getting papers and a polish now.

A few years ago I bought a Yoshimichi (I think Osaka-tamba sandai) - it's currently waiting to be polished. I think it all depends on the work. However they are all quite well regarded and Mishina work tends to sell pretty fast. Seeing you had a tanto, that was even somewhat rare, seeing most of their work are o-wakizashi or katana.

 

 

I also have a Tango no Kami Naomichi (early signature of Kanemichi) with a very nice ura-mei (生鍛 宍粟䥫 造 之)

According Fujishiro, the first two generations of Tanba no kami Yoshimichi (Yamashiro lineage) are rated Jo saku, followers are Chu-Jo. In the Osaka lineage, only the sodai is rated Jo-saku.
