Jim P Posted August 12, 2012 Report Posted August 12, 2012 Hi guys I would be interested what some of the guys think ? Ichimonji or Aoe. https://www.aoi-art.com/auction/en/auct ... 1213703271 Quote
Jean Posted August 12, 2012 Report Posted August 12, 2012 Jim, If NBTHK with all its archives and panel of experts cannot determine the school (this problem has already been treated on the Board), who do you think on the Board can for sure determine what it is? Quote
Jim P Posted August 12, 2012 Author Report Posted August 12, 2012 Hi Jean, I did not see it as a problem till you pointed it out. I posted it Not to go over the 2 papers issue, but to get some thoughts as to which way some of the guys would go to me it just had more of a Aoe something but could not define why.I know there are at times swords that are hard to pin down and speaking about them helps my woeful Kantei skills but if you think better not, I can understand why Quote
paulb Posted August 12, 2012 Report Posted August 12, 2012 Jim, Just a bit of reverse thinking but the best way to improve kantei skills is to look at recognised and indisputable examples of a school or smith's work which exhibits all the traits expected. Then when something less obvious appears you can pull out those features that match the examples you have seen. Looking at borderline multi possible examples can only confuse (me anyway) Quote
Jean Posted August 12, 2012 Report Posted August 12, 2012 Jim, How many Iwato Ichimonji blades have you seen, same question for Aoe blades? Now same questions for members. Who has been able to handle side by side two swords from these schools and compare them side by side. Here the kanteisho for Aoe school is den a certain smith. How many members have seen and study a blade by this smith and is able to give its characteristics. Sufficient to say that to a certain degree both schools are very close and according to your sensitivity you will chose either Aoe or Iwato Ichimonji. Among the greatest experts of the world, the answer is that both kantei are acceptable Quote
Jim P Posted August 13, 2012 Author Report Posted August 13, 2012 Hi Paul,Thanks for the post,I do look at recognized and indisputable examples of a school or smith's work which exhibits all the traits expected.and try when something less obvious appears to pull out those features that match the examples.but am interested when I see something like this that's a bit of a question mark I do spend a lot of time looking at blades but not Ichimonji, but try see them on the net/books which only get you so far now I have seen a few Aoe. :D Hi jean, No I have not able to handle side by side two swords from these schools and compare them side by side and probably will never do so and as you say it will depend on your perspective and that is the point I think, 2 right answers which do not come up that often thanks for clarifying it :D Quote
Jean Posted August 13, 2012 Report Posted August 13, 2012 Jim It is the problem of suriage blade you have always a real "Kanteisho", a written statement of an opinion. Nihontocraft.com (Danny Massey), if I remember well, had a blade (O suriage mumei), with three different Kanteisho. Quote
