  1. Additional photos with the area of concern, all else is in order. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Out of respect to my friend, I'd like to give him an answer as soon as possible.
  2. Friends, I wish I knew more and am being hard on myself. I am reading a lot and very thankful for the shared knowledge here. I have a friend who I really trust and respect, who is offering to sell me a nihonto. This is the maker: https://nihontoclub.com/smiths/IYE381 It has "Kitae" or ware, which I will post in a picture. Otherwise in good condition. What would be a ballpark or approximate price? It is a thick blade, papers, later end of 1400's, signed by a fairly well known person.
  3. Thank you in advance. I hope this post not only helps me as a new collector but many others. -What type of condition issues would be a deal breaker? (Please post photos as an example) -Is there more leniency on condition if the blade is 1600s, 1500s, 1400s, et cetera? -What is an example of structural damage or damage that could not be fixed? (Please share photos if possible) -Obviously, better condition relates to higher price, but on the older blades, is some cosmetic issue expected (other then battle damage?)
  4. Just wanted to give a sincere thank you for translation.
  5. Any info would be welcome; thank you in advance.
  6. Friends, Hope all is well wherever this message may find you. I have an opportunity to buy a nihonto from around the tear 1500. One interesting item of note is that the signature is filled in with gold. What is the story behind this? Thank you
  7. Sorry my post was a bit confusing. The scabbard is bad and to replace I'm probably sending good money after bad. The wiring on the handle is loose. Is there a way to fix or replace? This deal just left a bad taste in my mouth unfortunately.
  8. Here you go...scabbard is rusty but I cleaned it...blade is like 90%.
  9. I will add momentarily. Kind regards, Brian
  10. Second sword I bought ( I just started collecting in April of 2021). Not as described...Tons of old blemishes on scabbard...blade is good and has a Mon...wire wrapping on handle is bad; still has WWII tag on it and homemade box it was shipped back with. I am a new collector, please go easy on me. What would you do? Thank you
  11. All good friends. I am considering selling to buy a nihonto from around 1500 C.E. or AD. I am waiting until November because my work and family life is busy...had I learned of this hobby younger, it would be totally different, but now have family and kids that depend on me. Such is life.
  12. I am thinking about selling this here on the forum to fund another item. What would be a fair price? It's not a hundreds of year old nihonto, but good for a war time blade in my amateur opinion. Something someone could enjoy for not a lot of money. I was thinking about asking $1,350.00 obo. Thank you in advance.
  13. Friends, yes, I would be happy to share more photos with greater detail. I apologize if my original posts seemed somewhat dismissive...the quality is exceptional and I am very thankful to the kind man who sold it to me. I have just been really tired and burned out from work obligations...try to take off a few days and can't stop answering calls or emails...so it seems like the few vacation days I take, really, are not vacation, sadly. The tsuba and all fittings are papered and most excellent. The saya is just gorgeous in the proper light. Please give me a few days and i will get better photos in natural light/outside. Kindly, Brian
  14. Sorry friends as a new collector, I posted this in the wrong area. Mods, should you wish, please move. Best to you and yours.
  15. Thank you, John. It is in a temperature and humidity controlled environment.
  16. Should I just periodically, wipe it down gently with a clean napkin to remove any fingerprints/oil.?
  17. Not the best pictures on my part, but it has dragons and fish throughout the koshirae and tsuba.
  18. Recently picked up this set of koshirae, tsuba, and saya. I am not certain what material the saya is and was wondering if you could help advise. It is very interesting also because there is almost like crushed 'mother of pearl' or some such material that shines almost a purple to green and white depending on how it is held in the light. Tried to get some photos but you almost have to see it in person. Any advice on how to care for the saya, tsuba, and koshirae is appreciated as I am a new collector. Thank you in advance.
  19. I'm staying away from it and ebay sales; was more curious because it is coming from Japan and was just hopeful for feedback.
  20. https://www.ebay.com/itm/255048473166?hash=item3b6212da4e:g:bIkAAOSwfnVg6Rek ANTIQUE NIHONTO Japanese LONG SWORD KATANA MASAZANE 正真 signed w/KOSHIRAE NR!! Any experience with this seller? Issues with shipping? Just curious. Thanks
  21. Thanks for the replies, Gents. I found some on eBay that are antique, but would hold the sword vertically (?). From Edo period. The more I think about it, unless there is a good source to buy already fabricated displays, I am going to make something myself and likely ask an artist friend for input.
  22. Ammad, thank you very much for sharing this interesting sword on here. It is awesome and I really appreciate learning more about it. Best to you and yours, wherever this message finds you.
  23. Can anyone point me in the right direction of where to find a high quality stand for displaying / storing swords on a desk? I am a new collector and embarrassed due to having a basic stand from Amazon. I have some Elk antlers I was thinking about having a local artist make into a stand for one sword, but really would like something of quality, sturdy, and so forth. Thanks in advance for any recommendations. Where did you buy or where would you recommend?
  24. Yurie, thank you. This is an amazing resource you are kindly sharing. Please do not let others get you 'down' or depressed. Their narratives do not matter. You are doing an awesome job!
