Asking for a quick help with paper
sz_waldmann replied to sz_waldmann's topic in Translation Assistance
Hello! I took a picture of the nakago and of the whole blade so that the sugata may offer some help. Here's where I am at now: It is a Tanba no Kami Yoshimichi. It does not have the Kiku mon (which is said to be on the tang in the Kyoto branch), and the small middle stroke in "kami" is pointing downwards, which is said to be how the Osaka smiths did it. But I cannot deduce the time, the generation. The sugata looks like early / middle edo to me, but i am a very very very beginner, so that does not say much :D Any inputs are much appreciated. What do you guys think? thanks, SZAB -

Wow this was fast, thank you so much. does it say which generation? There is a second smaller part down at the lower right part. I am guessing Osaka shodai according to this page: https://japaneseswordindex.com/yoshmich.htm Szab -

Hi, absolutelly! I would pay for that. Markus did a few translations for me already but right now he does not have time... as I understood it will take some time until he takes translation jobs again with his work in the museum now. thanks, Szab -

Hi, I was wondering if there is a collection of known Kao of Sayagaki. There seem to be some better known Kaos like that of Mr. Tanobe Michihiro (Tanzan), or that of Kunzan and Kanzan, those would be relatively easy to find (not authenticate...). But what about all the others? How would you even start researching? It is of course about the sayagaki I am trying to decipher. Is there a list of some sort of the know monograms? thanks, SZAB

Hello, This is the final piece of the puzzle of my last buy. I managed to either get help with the rest or translated it myself (yay!) but this one eludes me. I figured that the rightmost coloumn is probably a date, but that is as far as I got. Could somebody please have a look at it? thanks, Szab

Hm, one thing bugs me. The kogatana has the mei Shizu Saburo Kaneuji... I found one Kaneuji who was the student of masamune and a lot of Kaneujis in the nihonto kanji pages swordsmith database,. One of them is more or less the contemporary of the maker of the Wakizashi, which would make sense, who is a chu saku and it says: Shinto, Mino no kuni (Genroku:1688) Chu saku noshu ogaki ju shizu saburo kaneuji I am willing to bet I do not own a kogatana made by masamune's student :D So I think "my" Shizu Saburo Kaneuji is the one above. Now what do those things mean? "Mino no kuni" and "noshu ogaki ju"? Szab -

Thank you all! I am afraid i don’t even know where to start with the numbers Is this kanji? Also, on the bottom of the shirasaya, does it say anything? Name of polisher or something? Thanks Szab -
Thank you kind sirs for your input. I will stay away from this one, tough it is truly spectacular - there is simply no way of telling like this. If it had papers or something, I'd gladly buy it. I just hope i will not see this resurface somewhere for ten times the money :D SZAB

Hello, this are the photos I got from the dealer. The patina looks right, the thing is pretty cool and amazing in person, but you know, this can be anything from a very good falsery to an old (like 100, 200 years old) fantasy item, or even the real deal. What do you think? And can somebody please read what's written on the box? Maybe that helps. thanks for your imput, SZAB

I asked for a photo, for i also do not readily believebthat there were any ninja shurikens at all. Or even ninjas for that matter. But it sure looked cool and crude in a sense. Szab

Hi, Just being curious. A few days ago I had the first (supposedly) antique shurriken in my hands, from a trusted seller. That thing was HUGE. Like my hand with my fingers extended huge. And heavy. It was black, had a nice patina, and a very old box (just like the tsuba boxes, just bigger). It was a five point star shape, each point having two cutting edges. Can this be right? I have checked the net, and I don't find anything like this. Most photos show shurikens as small as they are in movies. What do you think a fair price would be for such a piece (granted it is authentic)? Thanks, Szabolcs
