  1. Hi All, Does anyone know what is happening with the excellent Tosogu Classroom books that Markus Sesko was doing. I have not heard or read anything since 2020. I have Volumes 1 & 2 and am waiting for Volume 3. I know that he has been very busy with his newish job in the USA and the print quality problems that he had but any update would be appreciated. Many thanks

  2. Hi All, I am looking for some please. I have a NBTHK paper and tsuba box with an inscription. I believe that I understand most of what the paper says but I am a stickler for wanting things to be precise and accurate. I believe it says something like: 1, Estimation paper. 2-5 Shoki design, Mumei, Kyo Shoami. 6-7, Certificated Tsuba to Hozon Tosogu. 8, February 28th 2000. 9, NBTHK  seal. I am thinking that I have the actual wording wrong and have missed something, especially in lines 2-5. The box I believe it may just say “Shoki tsuba (Kyo Shoami)” but again I think that I have missed something. This is just for personal use, as I have no intentions of selling the tsuba. I just would like a precise translation which hopefully will help me in my understanding of Japanese. Your assistance would be much appreciated.

  3. If menuki are the wrong way  it’s called “nige-menuki” (a menuki that runs away). Obviously not a good omen for a samurai. With animals it would seem to be pretty straight forward. It is easy to tell the top and bottom. On their feet facing the kissaki, they can only go one way. With plants though, as in my photograph, I cannot tell which should be the top or bottom. Also when in a paulownia box is the omote menuki on the left or right?

  4. Hi guys, I have a couple of questions on etiquette and omote / ura. I know that with animal menuki, the animal runs towards the kissaki and with plants the roots are planted at the fuchi and grow towards the kashira. The question is: when in storage in a box or on display, do menuki face towards each other or away from each other. Is the omote menuki on the left or the right? With plants/flowers, how can you tell which is the omote and which the ura menuki? Is the larger one the omote? In my photograph, the menuki with the silver coloured centre flower (on the right) is 0.79mm smaller than the other. In the box they are growing away from each other, as though a fuchi was in the middle. Thank you for your help.

  5. I have a question about mei on a Japanese sword. It reads "Hoki (no) kami Fujiwara (Hiro) Hirotaka - Echizen ju" There are 2 kanji for Hiro which seems odd. In your opinion, does this seem genuine or a gimei? I have also posted this under the mei translation section as I am not sure where it would best go. Sorry for the duplication. Thank you for your help, it is much appreciated.

  7. Hi everyone, I am trying to learn how to translate a mei. Its very difficult when you have no one to point you in the right direction. I have been looking at the attached mei and the nearest that I can find is Uda Kuni ? ? Ko Shō.    I am obviously completely wrong. Would someone please be kind enough to break down the mei and tell me what it should be. I got the Uda from some Kanji flash cards and the Kuni, Ko Shō from Vol 2 of Hawley's Japanese Swordsmiths. Your help and instruction would be greatly appreciated.

  8. Hi Matt, thank you for that. I know that I am being a bit dense but can you break it down for me so that I can understand. Is your translation of all 4 sections or just the first? The right hand section is from a wakizashi, the first 3 from the left are from the katana. You have given me the Japanese characters from the first section. Is it possible to give me the same for the other sections. What does it say the nagasa is? I'm breaking this down in my head so please tell me if I am wrong. Student of Yamato kami Yoshimichi of Settsu, and was a resident of Toshuu = 1st section right side, Jiba is typical =1st section Left side, nagasa = 2nd section, written by Tanobe sensei (with his kao) = 3rd section. 4th right hand section = ?. Would Mr Tanobe sensei write a sayagaki on a blade that is not papered? Lots of questions I know but I am just trying to understand.

    Kind regards

    Stephen

  9. Hi All,

A quick question if I may. I need some help in translating some sayagaki.

Translating a mei is one thing but I am daunted by this. The blade is signed Kozuke-no-Kami Yoshikuni, real name is Morishita Magobei. The rest though is a mystery to me. I have attached some photographs that I hope are good enough to work with.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Kind regards

  10. Hi Everyone,

I am thinking of trying my hand at Oshigata making. Does any one know if there is a place in the UK where I can get correct paper and Sekkaboku (ink stone)? Thank you all in advance.

  11. Hi Guys. I'm Stephen Home. The person who has had his swords stolen. I'm afraid that I can not give the name of the person who took my swords. He has been bailed by the Police in Clacton, Essex, UK and they have asked me not to release his name in case in interferes with their investigation. His house and shop have been searched but my swords are not there. It is believed that he has passed them on to someone to sell or sold them himself. He has also taken about a dozen English swords. Can I please ask for you to keep an eye open for these and if anyone would like a CD giving more sword information and pictures then please let me have your address and I will send you a copy.

CLACTON POLICE IS DEALING WITH THIS AND THEIR CRIME REFERENCE NUMBER IS:

    42/11174/16

Your help is very much appreciated.

    Domo Arigato Gozaimashita

  12. Thank you both for your help. It's good to know what the mei means, even if it may not original. I like the design, which is the main thing, and am happy to own it. Thank you again

  13. I have a nice kozuka in the shape of a dried Salmon. I was wondering if any one could help with the identification of it for me. I have been told that it might be Masayuki but I'm not sure. Any help would be very much appreciated as I find this kozuka really quite interesting. Thank you all for helping me

  14. I am trying to translate the inscriptions on a couple of blades. One on a katana that I recently received and the other on a katana that I was for Iai. I'm new to this but think that i have the date for one of them. Any help would be very much appreciated.

The one I've called War fan, because of the tsuba design, I think is "A day in August 1939"

I hope that I have done the pictures correctly as this is my 1st post.
