Hello,

as an absolute rookie on Nihonto blades, I need some assistance on evaluating an unknown blade.

At first I want to make sure, that I have great respect on this theme.

I am training on blades and different combat sports for many years, but I am starting right now with the philosophy of Nihontos.

The blade I am wondering about was found hidden on a roof by a house renovation.

It is in a bad condition, but there are some points, which make me feel, that this is not a normal fake.

Point 1 is the stamping, which seems not to be faked. On this point I lay my trust in the knowledge of the forum members to help me identifying the stamping...

Point 2 is the nakago. I have never seen pictures of fakes with such massive nakagos. The fakes I have seen up to now have these tiny nakagos.

Point 3 is the whole geometry, which looks beautyful in my (novice..) eyes.

So maybe I make a fool out of myself by posting the 10000th picture of a 50 $ chinese replica, but here are the pictures...

Thanks for all comments!

Stephen

Not the 10000th picture....but certainly in the hundreds

yes, afraid it is a fake. Chinese. Bad kissaki and kanji. Don't worry, stick with it, and in a while you will be able to spot these instantly.

It's a fake. Speaking of nakago, you must know that nakago are very carefully filed. The files'marks are called yasurime, where are they? Now, first lesson, here is a website with real highres Nihonto pictures, look at them, learn them by heart, learn what is a yokote, how hada looks like (from these pictures).

Advice: Buy 2/3 books on Nihonto and try to see the real thing.

Edit to add: watch the kissaki and learn what is the fukura.
