RobertM Posted February 22, 2012 Report Posted February 22, 2012 Hi guys, Please can i get some assistance with this tsuba. I was guessing Owari Anyone able to identify the design? It's not in great shape as it has quite alot of active rust which id like to at least stabilise. Worth using bone to remove the red rust? Rob M Quote
Soshin Posted February 23, 2012 Report Posted February 23, 2012 Hi Rob M., I would try to remove some of the rust. Using bone or irony is fine. Please provide measurements and some shots of the rim. It will help ID the tsuba. Yours truly, David Stiles Quote
RobertM Posted February 23, 2012 Author Report Posted February 23, 2012 Hi, Its around 6cm, pic of rim: Quote
CurtisR Posted February 25, 2012 Report Posted February 25, 2012 There is also a product called "Break-free" which is very non-damaging but cuts rust when used w/ a bone or ivory to remove the rust. Just make sure to wipe it all off & re-apply little by little as you go. You can find the product at gun stores. Curtis R. Quote
Soshin Posted February 26, 2012 Report Posted February 26, 2012 Hi, Its around 6cm, pic of rim: Hi Rob M., Could you please list the thickness of the tsuba at the rim also? Is the rim or center of the tsuba the thickest? Thank you. Yours truly, David Stiles Quote
runagmc Posted February 27, 2012 Report Posted February 27, 2012 I don't think Break-Free would be a good idea. It's not made for use on patina. It's an oil compound made to clean guns. I don't think this tsuba looks that rusted anyway... Quote
RobertM Posted February 27, 2012 Author Report Posted February 27, 2012 Hi all, the rim is 5mm, the thickness at the centre is fraction more. Quote
kusunokimasahige Posted February 27, 2012 Report Posted February 27, 2012 I would try to remove some of the rust. Using bone or irony is fine. I think you meant Ivory.... I would not want to make the tsuba angry... KM Quote
RobertM Posted February 28, 2012 Author Report Posted February 28, 2012 So does anyone have any idea on the design? Quote
Soshin Posted February 29, 2012 Report Posted February 29, 2012 I think you meant Ivory.... I would not want to make the tsuba angry... KM Hi KM, The funny and ironic thing is these type of mistakes are the result of spelling autocorrect on my iPhone. I would go on to say don't over clean and leave the inside part of the sukashi alone. Only clean it if the rust is damaging the sukashi. Do not use any chemicals or oils to clean the rust.
