JPGH Posted August 9 Report Posted August 9 Hi all, Haven't posted here in a few years and hope I'm not bothering you all with my question(s) I have regarding a couple of objects we obtained. I'm not a collector whatsoever of such objects, so if I make a mistake in the objects lingo, please don't hesitate to correct me. The first object appears to be a, Tonkosu. It has a ivory netsuke with a moveable gilt-silver(?) center. The ojime I *think* is made if amber(?) and it's signed but too small to capture images of the signature. Under the lid is an old 1932 adhered inventory label from a very reputable museum here in the States. There's one small piece of aogai inlaid at center middle. My question/s: any thoughts on the age and possible maker of this object? The second object I believe is a kogo. It took be a while to ID the signature and I believe it's signed in aogai on base: Somada Mitsuhisa(?). I can't seem to find much on the maker other than an Inro made by him that sold at a German auction house back in, 1998. Have I correctly ID'ed the maker/signature? Any thoughts on age? Bugyotsuji Posted August 9 Report Posted August 9 Yes, those both look to have decent age to them. Interesting objects. The tonkotsu seems to depict battlefield aftermath. The ‘kōgo’ (?) is signed Somada Mitsuhisa, as you say. There was also a Hisamitsu in the Somada line of lacquer artists. There is a general *discussion of the Somada family line, (starting with Somada Kiyosuke in the early 18th C) but although his name is listed there is nothing specific for Mitsuhisa. *”The Index of Inro Artists”, by E.A.Wrangham, pp 271,271 3 Quote

Do you or anyone else have any thoughts on the actual or approximate age of these items? Early-19th C.? Mid-19th C.? etc.? Also, any thoughts on the possible maker of the, Tonkotsu? It's style, etc.?
