Hi Robin!

Did it come with fittings?  They tell a little more of the story, so if you have some, please give us a shot or 2 of the whole rig.

 

Your sword was made by 国秀 (Kunihide), not Kanekuni.  This should be your guy:

"KUNIHIDE (国秀), Shōwa (昭和, 1926-1989), Gifu – “Kunihide” (国秀), real name Niwa Kamaichi (丹羽蒲一), born June 29th 1898, he worked as guntō smith."

 

The stamp at top was used by the civilian Seki Cutlery Manufacturers Association on approved blades between 1935 - 1942, with most of them carrying the stamp made in 1940-41.
