Nicholas Posted May 25, 2024 Report Posted May 25, 2024 I have what appears to be a Shin Shinto O-kissaki katana. 28”nagasa 4” kissaki mounted in Suya type 98 gunto koshirae. The sword has some interesting activity in the hamon lots of what I believe to be sunagashi. Can anyone tell me anything else about the sword. Can add more pics if necessary. Quote
Rivkin Posted May 25, 2024 Report Posted May 25, 2024 Vivid hada with plenty of o-mokume and high contarast, nioi hamon which is not truly standing out. Ikkansai Yoshihiro school. The nakago can be showa rather than shinshinto style, but this needs extra study. Quote

I was thinking the hada was Itame-nagare or Itame mixed with masame. What is your opinion on age? Late shin Shinto? Quote
Rivkin Posted May 26, 2024 Report Posted May 26, 2024 Can't tell without seeing the nakago sine habaki in good light. Quote

Rivkin Posted May 28, 2024 Report Posted May 28, 2024 The nakago has a showa feel and yasurime in particular done sloppy. Shortened to fit gunto mounts? Later imitation of Yoshihiro's work? Could be. I would also say the work itself is half a notch below Ikkansai Yoshihiro himself. Quote
Bryce Posted May 29, 2024 Report Posted May 29, 2024 G'day Nicholas. I like it. I don't think the yasurime is sloppy. I think it may be early gendai. It almost reminds me of Gassan work. Do the numbers on the fittings correspond to those painted on the nakago? Cheers, Bryce Quote

It has a powerful shape, Nice hada and plenty of sunagashi. The yasurime isn’t sloppy. It’s pretty well finished. The painted numbers are a little too faded for me to tell if they correspond with what’s on the mounts. I posted pictures of the kanji on the fittings here in the translation section. I’d have to take a better look at it. 1 Quote
