Matsunoki Posted January 22, 2023 Report Posted January 22, 2023 Well, let’s be honest. It’s a bit of a rough wakizashi. It is a genuine old Samurai item but with several problems. The polish is in poor condition, it has chips to the edge and the koshirae (fittings) do not look particularly good. If we could see the nakago (tang) and an overall picture of the blade with no mounts whatsoever then we might know more. But based on what the images show us, I don’t think it’s one to chase…..unless very cheap. I don’t think there is much to study in this condition. All the best Colin 2 Quote

No. The Japanese recommend beginning one's studies with the best swords possible. Which is very sound advice. While it is not always possible and often difficult to access top quality swords for study, books are one short term alternative solution in order to learn the new vocabulary that is essential for learning until which time you do gain access to a quality sword. Save your money and don't buy junk is a piece of advice frequently overheard being given to beginners for good reason. If a sword has little to offer in the way of study, then what is it that you'll be studying? Do you want to become a bad sword collector/student? A mediocre sword collector/student? Or an excellent sword collector/student? http://www.japaneseswordindex.com/gdsword.htm Regards, Quote
Baba Yaga Posted January 24, 2023 Report Posted January 24, 2023 Depends on WHY you're buying? If it's because of study no. If it's because you want a Japanese sword ... then it's up to your budget. Quote
