Hi folks -

I may have had this up before but I searched my own and can't find it. It has a total length 36.5 in. Nagasa a little over 27 3/4'' Nakago dark with 2 mekugiana, Sori is 3/4", Boshi has turn back on both sides extending back behind the yokote , gunome midare hamon >? and the steel is very dark and seems to be itame with masame.

At one time thought it would be late Nambochuko early Muromachi , Naoe Shizu. Part of the thought is based on the fact that it is mounted in very nice high end mounts, signed fuchi kashira tsuba.

Brian,

The sword looks ubu to me - one hole and hamon ends right after hamachi (see pic). It also does not have much curvature. Considering that after just a cursory glance and I would start with Shinto. However, can you tell us more about - or provide more pictures that show - the areas of masame hada and how it interacts with itame hada, what activities there are in the hamon, the depth of the nioi guchi, etc. Also, can we see a close-up picture of the nakago and the yasurime?

Well - i did find some old pictures of this blade before it was polished a while ago and ten years before I did have it on the board so I will upload all the pictures I can find and see if thoughts have changed or new people on the board are as smart or smarter than a decade ago  :o

The blade is ubu but has 2 mekugiana , no yasurime as it is too old for them to have survived , old patinated rust so I did enclose a colour picture

Here is some more pics - I am NO good at taking these cause the blade looks a hell of a lot better than these ! The hamon in the boshi is wild.

Brian,

Thanks for sharing the extra pics. I agree it looks like it has a wild boshi. A few extra things I gleaned include a smattering of nie in and above the hamon, some looser mokume structure, kurijiri nakagojiri, and even though the nakago is rusted it looks like kiri yasurime.

Maybe a late Muromachi/early Shinto (i.e. Keicho Shinto as Chris mentioned perhaps) blade with Soshu/Mino leanings. Without seeing more, I'd guess something like Chikuzen Nobukuni, Shitahara, Sue-Mino.

That does not narrow it down much, but its my first guess.

This might be a good candidate for the upcoming NTHK-NPO Shinsa.

I always felt the overall shape was closer to late Muromachi 1560's as the length is 73cm and the sori being 1.2cm is not really curved. The nakago is certainly of a koto appearance. The grain along the hamon is fairly straight in most places and although many Naoe shizu were a little earlier the school traditions were carried on.

Here is a NAoe Shizu blade and I also attach the fittings that were on this blade. The Fuchi Kashira are signed Tsurahide and the Tsuba - KInai - both early 1800's

I tried this stitching deal but all of the pictures were not the same side ratio so they did come together but go from larger to smaller

Beautiful blade Jean - I may have seen other pictures several years ago - there is also a Naoe SHizu in The Boston Museums book - the hada in my blade is quite odd as well as no real pattern is evident anywhere - it swirls then straightens out and - hard to describe as any one type - and there are further grain ;ones between the larger ones you can see on the picture and on the lower right side the little black dots are all through it as well.

I truly appreciate your assistance, knowledge and good eye - now if you could help me touch up the paint chips on my alloy wheels I would be really appreciative :freak:
