  1. Is it just me or can you see what appears to be a phantom suguha under the more obvious hamon? Strange
  2. We are in Hawaii, I would imagine there are plenty of aficionados and collectors out here, but not sure about shows. Will look it up, great idea.
  3. Thanks again all. I would like to acquire some books, but in a way I am wary of making nihonto a full blown hobby as I did with guitars/amps/recording gear. I'm afraid my lovely wife would be somewhat distraught if I allowed that to happen at this point in our lives. Later, absolutely. I have learned from you all how to not damage them (nakago preservation, never attempt to hone blades, never practice cutting with one, proper storage etc) so I thought I'd get an inexpensive but nicely made wak just to have ONE to behold, until the kids are grown and I can be financially irresponsible again with my passions. I have a couple very nice Japanese style blades (Huawei) to play with, but of course a traditionally made antique is in a different world, art-wise. Interesting how in some ways the art that is nihonto and it's appreciation has much in common with other forms of art including music. I need to tread lightly... addictive personality
  4. Thanks all, I was only considering this one because it is priced lower than I usually find in this condition, and to find my first nihonto for under $1000 seemed too good to be true. Of course I am still learning and just wanted to check here to make sure I didn't miss anything that would indicate it is a fake or non-nihonto in some way. I appreciate most of the responses, thank you.
  5. Mumei wakizashi. Should I go for it? I'm wary but hopeful.
  6. Looks intriguing. I think better photos are in order... Can you get more shots in focus and more areas of the blade / fittings etc.?
  7. Thanks, Jean, I was talking about the bamboo peg, yes. I had to shape it a bit for good fit (new one).
  8. ATTN moderators, apologies it seems I missed the "Military Swords of Japan" section! Possible to relocate this thread? Hi all, don't know too much about these, but thought you might enjoy another photo essay. Not likely a masterpiece but still a piece of history I reckon. I did replace the mekugi with one from a kit, the original was almost nonexistant, just a thin bent scrap that wasn't doing much. No markings or stamps anywhere that I could find. Some pics are before cleaning, some are after. And don't worry I did not clean the nakago and the file pictured was never near the blade (only used the file to shape the new mekugi a bit). Cheers me
  9. Thanks Jean, I have already learned a bit, and a million tons to go. I have certainly learned that most modern replicas are nothing like the real thing. Thanks again all and despite this being a question you've answered a zillion times, what would be a good first book to acquire?
  10. NOT an authentic, and yes it is a modern functional replica. Hope I didn't alarm anyone. Just want to learn as much as I can before touching or thinking about the real one I have access to etc. I am an amateur in this study, having spent all my life learning the art of guitars, performing, recording and just now branching out to the next coolest thing on Earth which is the subject of this forum. Thanks all
  11. Thanks all, appreciate the advice, makes sense.
  12. Sorry perhaps I have committed a faux pa by asking about this (a)symmetry. If so perhaps someone might PM and let me know, I am new here and may have missed something. Thanks all. I do appreciate the members here and the wealth of experience etc. Aloha
  13. You can see in the pics the hira-ji is about 3/32" shorter on one side.
  14. By the way this is not in regards to the well made nihonto I posted about a few weeks ago, which I'm sure has perfect symmetry. This is something I purchased for cutting mats etc. as I would never dare attempt to cut with the antique, real blade. Perhaps sometime in the long distant future, after a professional polish and 1000s of hours of practice on my behalf. Anyhow, I guess this was a silly question as I assume properly shaped katana blade should always be perfectly symmetrical?
