I have to apologize, sometimes it is easy to foget that technology does not always lend to manners. My first name is Keith, and i do habe to truly thank each of you that have posted responses. i am a blacksmith and knife maker from Oregon with about 30 years of experience, but know absolutely nothing about Japanese swords because that was not where my interests were until I recieved this incredible gift. Thank you so much for this information. I see several posts from members with swords that have the same signature. If this was a "manufactured" or machine made sword and bot traditionally or hand made, can i be comfortable with restoring the handle and missing handle spacer and guard. Or should it be left as is ? opinions ?

I recently received a Japanese sword from my sister in law that she "found" at a garage sale. She asked if I could out a handle in it, however upon closer inspection I found kanji on the tang. i need help, as noone seems to be able to read it.
