  1. Hello, I've recently come across a menpo with a rather rough looking surface. I have not come across many menpo with such a surface online. Is this due to oxidation, quality of iron, preservation or maybe artistic choice? Thank you, Jonas
  2. I finally decided to purchase it after the seller offered a nice discount because of the missing ears. (altough as by John the raised ridge does seem to make it questionable if there were any ears.) The seller also stated that the color for the cords was too bright and I could change it. (and just to be sure it passed the magnet test). Are there any good sources on Kanto men?
  3. Thank you for the responses John and Uwe, I don't have any extra photos of the raised ridge, but it I believe it is as you said, there used to be ears attached to it. The color of the lacing is indeed quite bright, I initially tought that might have been some changes in brightness or contrast from the phone's camera, but then the last 2 pictures are much much darker, so it could be anything haha (altough it's most likely closer to the bright version of the picture) I know much less about the lacing so I didn't pay attention to that much, now that I look at it some parts do seem rather...messy in comparison to many other examples. Regarding the "Sendai features" is there a specific style of menpo in that area and by what name would that go? I only know about the Sendai Dou. Thank you! Jonas
  4. Hi I would like to ask your opinion on this menpo. It's on my to-buy list. Is this one real? The seller describes it as being Edo period and with Sendai characteristics. He also said the rope has been replaced. Thank You! Jonas
  5. ohh I see, and I read some of these questions on the listing as well it all seems to vague to be a good repro.
  6. oh woops, I meant a real reproduction indeed. Ok I actually didn't know that about the o-yoroi, good to know. thank you
  7. hello, I'm living in China and saw this o-yoroi on a second hand app. Is there a way to figure out this is real without travelling all the way? The seller has several positive reviews (no negatives)
  8. Thank you! I've messaged Guido and Lee. On the Chinese "ebay"(kinda) I've seen loads of antiques, sometimes even nihonto, mostly Chinese bronze era antiques though, which seem quite interesting, but I know next to nothing about Chinese swords, since as you said, books on Chinese swords are indeed quite scarce... I'll take a look at the flea market here in Xi'an!
  9. Hello, I'm currently living in China, I'd like to know if there are any collectors in China on here or if there are any specific laws on importing antique Japanese swords into China, as well as the possession of it. Thank you for your help! Jonas D.
  10. Thank you, I knew there wasn't much i could do... except bringing it to a polisher but that might get expensive and a gamble with this blade. even with the the smallest almost unexisting chance to damage my sword i'm panicking so i will leave it as.( it even pained me when i was breaking the tsuka off(other story: the tsuka was glued together with lacquer and glue.))
  11. here are some pics excuse me for my lateness but i wasn't actually referring in my first post to 'THE polishing' which i am totally unqualified for but was referring to the improvement of a blade full of scrathes and dirt by cleaning the dirt off the blade a bit and such.
  12. and the weekly uchiko works, i see a big difference now. but yet again it has alot of scratches made by previous owners... and i kinda knew there wasn't a way for the polishing itself to be done by me, just curious if there was a other way of cleaning the blade a bit. I think i have some pics somewhere of the blade...
  13. does anyone know if the polisher Zenon Van Damme is still active?
  14. ok! i actually already had in mind that it wouldn't be a good idea... But never hurts to ask... Thank you! i now i'm certain that it's a bad idea
  15. I have a question: Is there a way to polish a nihonto for someone who doesn't know how to polish... So after i got my wakizashi out of it's stuck tsuka by destroying the tsuka i had the idea to restore the sword a bit, because it's full of scratches and whatnot. and i mean like a loooot of scratches. So i want to clean it up a bit and be able to see all it's aspects cleaner. Thanks in Advance
  16. i'd really love to see a documentary about Muramasa too
  17. I will do that as soon as i can! I'd love to know more about the mei Regards,
  18. of course, it was around 600 euros Regards,
  19. Finally!!! i I succeeded in taking it apart! Sadly there was glue on the nakago,,, And i didn't see any signature on first glance,,, (Also any hints on how i could remove the glue?)
  20. yes indeed! i find that quite interesting that the mei is so rarely strange
  21. okay so i got most of the same off on one side to see the holes but i found only one candidate-hole so i tried to get it out but with no result so now i'm in kind of a pinch here, how can i advance? Regards,
  22. finally after a while i'm back again! tomorrow i will start breaking it apart! And any tips on how to break it apart? (i'm actually even considering doing some polishing on it after i know what's under the tsuka!!!) Regards,
  23. It's okay, apologies accepted ( even though it WAS kind of harsh ) But since i am only a beginner, a student and i can't afford the flawless or the ones with a certificate,(i could have bought one but i was kind of worried about the customs and etc,) And i think for the price it looked pretty fair Regards,
  24. Hello, last time i had made a topic about the strange mei this blade has, but now i would like to hear your opinions about this blade. According to the seller this blade is from the 14-15th century. It has a honor mark on the mune. The hamon: a midare hamon and on the other side a kobushigata choji. It has the strange signature saying: Yamato no Kami Fujiwara Daijyo Norishige. The cutting edge is 50 cm (19,5 inch) thickness 5mm width: 26mm So i would like to hear your opinions! ( i only started collecting nihonto last year) Thank you!
  25. Ok, until now i've tried a lot of things to get it off( nothing helped, or i just did it wrong), but came to an idea: can i heat the tsuka with a hair dryer to get the glue weak and so take the tsuka apart, or getting the same off? Really almost nothing i did seemed to work... Jonas
