  1. Yeah, I feared as much What gives it away? I'd love to know more about nihonto. @Surfson He got it at a judo tournament in the late 80s. It's said it was bought at an antiquary. I figured it could be a fake, as a real katana would be too expensive to buy just for that.
  2. Hello Nihonto forum, this is my first post here. I recently inherited a katana from my grandfather, and was wondering when it was from (or even if it's legit). The search led me to a few website, and then to this forum. I read quite a bit about it these past few days, it's amazing how deep the subject goes. But I don't think I'm near ready to determine anything, so I'd like to count on the help of you guys for this. All I know is that it was given to my grandfather 20-25 years ago, and before that it was bought from an antiquarian. It looks quite plain to me, especially compared to others I've seen here, so maybe a WWII sword? It has no papers, or if it had, wasn't bequested to me. Anyway, I took a few pictures of what I think is important (couldn't get the nakago, because one of the ends of both mekugis is hidden beneath the hilt wrap, and I was too afraid was ruining it to try moving the wrap - or is that normal?), if you don't mind taking a look... sword with saya on sword with saya off close-up of tsuka close-up of tsuba close-up of kashira attempted picture of hamon attempted picture of hamon II close-up of kissaki
