  1. Thanks for that massive database of prints. Def similar to the one I have. But I have spent several hours trying to find this specific series, but not been able to find anything. The box at the top with the jagged black and white pattern are nowhere to be found Thanks again, Piers! Jan
  2. Thanks for the info on Toyokuni, Malcom. You are probably right about the Chusingura, Piers. The jagged black and white symbol is standard with this story. And the guy (Lord Asano) is holding the sword wrapped in ricepaper. No wonder he is looking a bit "focused" /Jan
  3. Let´s run with the print-thread a bit longer. Here´s my first ever Japanese print which I bought 10-12 years ago. Kunisada. Possible 1820-30. I always wondered what it´s depicting? I bought it mostly because I liked the sinister look on the face of the guy in the front. Sometimes it´s the little things... /Jan
  4. You def on to something, Malcom. I guess both the bracken or the fern is quick growing and tough plants, thats hard to kill. Just like a gritty samurai. Would be great if someone could connect them to a specific clan. /Jan
  5. Thanks, Ian! I´ve been looking in my books and came up zero. Perhaps time for a Google-search on fern shoots... :D Thanks again! Jan
  6. Hi! I stumbled on to this jingasa and got stuck on the red sign. Very quick question: What does it mean? The jingasa is of metal with rivited sections, so I guess it was used by teppo-ashigaru. Thanks! Jan
  7. It was a very slow and painfully hot night, Ron! Best place to endure was my basement where I happen to keep my computer Malcom, a big thanks for the added info. Stocking up on some good books for the winter is always a good thing to do even if those cold days feels a bit far away right now... Jan
  8. Your right, Ron. The artist gave the subject in the print a custom made stock. I also reflect on the length of the gun. Almost of Hazama-size. The butt of the gun is cut in a rather unusual way. And if You really want to go in to further details, the hammer seems to hit a bit off. Almost at the hinge of the pancover. Amazing what You can find from one print on a humid saturday night :D Jan
  9. Thanks for the great info, Malcom. And the link. Very useful. It´s always more fun when You know a little bit of the background. Here´s a closer shot of the gun. Remarkable details when You really look at it. At least for a true friend of teppos... Jan
  10. Here´s a Yoshitoshi-print from his Kinsei Kyogiden-series I just picked up. I have a couple of his later prints. But this one will find a nice spot in the teppo-section of my collection. Intresting bulge on the stock near the muzzle. Haven´t seen that shape on any real teppo that I can remember. Perhaps some artistic freedom. Just wish I could read the story /Jan
  11. Well used  The height is about 12 cm. /Jan
  12. Here´s two gunpowder cases I stumbled upon on the net. One suppose to be Japanese (the one standing up) and the other one chinese. For a non-pro like myself it´s not easy to spot the which one is what. Any obvious clues to look for? I rather like the "Japanese" one. /Jan
  13. Oh Lord, this can be really really bad. I´m always for a samuraimovie, but whats up with the red uniforms the ronins are wearing? Prehaps the Ii:s red devils makes a suprise visit. And who knows. Perhaps Bilbo is donning an armour and goes hobbitcrazy on Kira Jan
  14. God only knows which roll Mr Keanu will play? There ain´t so many non Japanese in that story... Jan
  15. Hi guys! On the subject of big mounted Japanese cannons. Here´s a picture I found of a big cannon mounted on bales of straw. I noticed the bale hanging from the barrel as a counterweight and also the sight which I haven´t seen before. I feel the whole construction seems a bit shaky. Only held in place by four wooden stakes. And I don´t think the bale hanging from the barrel could have had much of an inpact. This print is made 1614. I guess it could have been used in the Osaka-campaigne. Jan
  16. The amazing internet. Within two hours we go from a question to picture confirmation. It clearly works. You get a clear shot even with this support. But I still have my doubts about the string. I just hope Your wife didn´t stumbled in at the wrong moment Jan
  17. If You are right about the teppo-support, I feel I was at least half way there with my christmastree ornament... All jokes aside. I acctually thought this could have something to do with a teppo when I saw the octagon-shape of the "thing". I just think it looks a bit weak for that use. Must have been supported by a very strong cord. Wouldn´t it obscure the aim? /Jan
  18. My motto is "choose your battles". Helps somewhat when the cold wind blows down your backside Regarding Your puzzle I would guess that its´something You put in the christmastree :D EDO-period of course... Jan

    Menpo!

Nice looking "fix up" with the menpo, Ian. With Your closeup I can def see some similarities in the matr with my menpo. And also the general look of it. As I said before this nerigawa has really opened up a new avenue of knowledge regarding armour of the samurai. I have acctually replaced my iron menpo on the fully dressed Takigawa-samurai with this nerigawa one. He deservs nothing but the best :D Thanks again, Ian! Jan
  20. We can call it a "none meaning mei" I wonder if that falls under the gimei-dept  Thanks a lot for Your effort, Piers! Jan
  21. Here´s the pic of the signature. If You don´t know your hands shake before, try operating a supermacro with one hand... I hope this helps. Thanks! Jan
  22. Well I guess it´s kind of a success, anyway. Buying from a big auctionhouse should at least give You some assurance that it´s not a complete fake. However, I have in less than 24 hours learnt that the world of netsuke is a minefield. As with nihontos You must do Your homework. But if I know myself I will probably pick something up sooner or later in the field of netsuke. Could You make something out of the signature, Piers? Thanks for the effort of clearing this up! Jan
  23. :D I guess the only thing left is to wait for the verdict... I hope they go gentle on my poor little doorbreaker. Jan
  24. Looking at the wear, they been around for awhile :D But this can of course be artificial. But I think the coin netsuke shows sign of both older and newer wear around the himotoshi (thats a term I didn´t know 24 hours ago). But I could be dead wrong here. Also the fact it´s not signed perhaps speaks against the "chinese fake" ruling. But again... Where is the teppo-firing Piers when You need him? Jan
  25. The netsuke thread lives on. I acctually found a very similar netsuke on the net, just now. This one is signed "Masatsugo". They want a whopping 1200 pounds for it. I find the "patina" rather in the same fashion as mine. Not saying that mine is in the same league And Ron, they also thinks it,s 19th century. So You are probably spot on regarding the age. /Jan
