This is a wooden gunbai I purchased at a yard sale. I have attached, or tried to attach, front and back images. I would like to know the meaning of the characters, as well as the symbolism of the sun and moon. Intial research tells me that this is used in sumo wrestling by the referee, but I am interested in more details, to help me appreciate more fully the history and meaning of this beautiful piece.
