  1. Hello All, Thank you so much! My name actually is just J and happily ask that you use my first name. I had recognized No Kami Fujiwara Kane but thats as far as I had gotten last night. I kept wrestling with a variation of Mune but knew I was on the wrong track. Naka was never on my radar...So while Im disappointed that I didnt work it out myself I really appreciate what you have given. Dates likewise are very difficult for me, so I really appreciate the help and will now go back to the books. Photos of blade are as it was when initially drawn from saya. I will take the liberty to post additional photos once its been properly cleared for better viewing so that it may act as a future reference for someone. The saya is tape wrapped as well so I will remove the tape and evaluate..If its largely separated I will razor separate and clean...if not I'll clear out the bottom as suggested....I will be returning the sword to the owner tomorrow...hopefully he will be able to better preserve it and frankly if it comes to me one day I would be very happy! I think its a great sword. Should I post better detail photos? Thanks again, J
  2. Hello All, discovered a swordin shirasaya with kanji, hanging high on a wall out of 4 yr olds reach. As added safety saya taped shut with duct tape, held together with electric tape. Had inherited from his grandfather...wrong war, wrong time and wrong mounts. Gently explained fact from family fiction. Asked if I could examine it. Ultimately let me take it for a few days. 27 inch with vibrant tall 3 cedar flat repeat hamon pattern. Very small tip with good turn back, reduced proportions rather than snout style. Good curvature, falling rain habaki. Lot of prints, begining rust, no visible openings or cracks. Told me that because the handle kept falling off he glued it on with gorillia glue. Allowed me to take it for three days to properly clean blade and try to correct mistake of glue. Razor seperated the tsuka. Gently softened glue with acetone than rubbed with hardrock maple(hard wood) to reveal sig and date. Two hole nakago. Have been working the blade with powder ball and choji oil. Trying to crack date and signiture. Would like to have Id'd it when I return it to go along with a tutorial for continued care. Am asking if anyone would care to help out with sig and date? nakago and saya kanji match...even just some hints would be appreciated. Thanks J
  3. Thank you. Likewise I read Oshu ju Kanesada. The first and last characters raise red flags for me suggesting gemei. And the date raised some question in my mind. The quality of the blade is very utilitarian though the hamon is consistent with what I've found listed for Kanesada 10th. Yours is the only Oshigata that Ive seen, I didn't find him in my Mino book of Oshigata. From where did you find the sample? Best regards J
  4. Hello my name is J Karner. I've been asked to evaluate a sword held by a collector. He has no intention of selling it. I'm doing it strictly because it is an opportunity to study, there is no money involved. Initially I was simply going to give him my assessment, but now I'm thinking I should check myself independantly. My question concerns the mei, I've translated it but find no oshigata to match, plus there is the issue of the date. I'm asking that anyone that responds take a little time to evaluate the mei and date in combination before posting. In the event you have access to oshigata to support I would appreciate a heads up to locate it myself. I have oshigata that does not match. My photos were to big to post so I hosted them at our website. http://www.crescentmoonantiquesandsalva ... ductID=384 http://www.crescentmoonantiquesandsalva ... ductID=384 As side, the katana is civilian mount. Anyone interested is welcome to request additional photos and or enter into side discussions concerning the sword, email crescentmoon@ntd.net However, I would ask that posts concerning the mei be polite, as I am afraid I may present them to the owner as well. He knows civil war, european ww2 quite well but with regards to the Japanese Sword he knows very little. Thank you and best regards to those I know. J Karner
  5. I should clarify, I'm not interested in your names or your emails. Frankly I don't understand where that is coming from. I don't typically sell swords and the website was not designed for that. I don't know what you mean by having to provide that information to enter the website. I had no interest in drawing your attention for the purpose of selling you architectural antiques. It is however, where I hosted the photos. My apologies for spelling errors, thats on me. With regards to not revealing the people who have examined the sword or polished it, my thought was that I would be barrowing against the credibility of others and have always believed work should be judged on its own merit. Should have said less, I can see that and agree. With regards to return, correct me of course, but I offered a three day evaluation period. I did the best I could with the photos. Certainly an overall and better close ups of the nakago would be beneficial. Finally with regards to shinsa (or other restoration) and the issue of waiting until that was done. I hadn't really planned on selling the sword. A family opportunity arose and I decided to sell the sword but I don't really need to. Thanks for your imput. J
  6. Hello to all, I am brand new to your forum....Frankly Ive never been on a forum before. I have collected nihonto since the mid 90's. Recently I listed a sword on ebay, nagasa 28 1/2", muromachi period. I am no expert, but Ive studied enough to recognize a good or great blade. At least I thought I had. This one for me was a home run, though I'd not submitted it for Shinsa. The sword didnt reach reserve by a long shot. I lowered the reserve to $2000 and relisted it. I don't get it and Im reaching out to you all to check to see if Im crazy. I see mediocure gendaito, even some hantanto closing for more than two grand and have always just kind of chuckled. Now however its forcing me to question what I am missing. Would someone please take a look at it under ebay 290492132529 or search under seller CrescentMoonAntiquesAndSalvage. I guess Im just questioning myself with regards to my ability to assess a blade. If you dont want to go to ebay its on our web http://www.CrescentMoonAntiquesAndSalvage.com Thanks in advance for any insight.Regards J
