Stephan Posted Tuesday at 08:06 PM Report Posted Tuesday at 08:06 PM Up for sale is a beautiful, fully traditional post-war Gendaito Japanese katana by the well-documented swordsmith Nankai Taro Masataka (南海太郎正尊), real name Morioka Toshi. Masataka has an impressive lineage, having studied under the legendary Kasama Ikkansai Shigetsugu and later under Takahashi Sadatsugu (who was designated a Living National Treasure in Japan). His work is well-recorded in major references such as Markus Sesko’s Japanese Swordsmiths A-Z and John Scott Slough’s Modern Japanese Swordsmiths 1868-1945. This particular blade is in an outstanding state of preservation and comes in a complete, high-quality set of fittings. Blade Details & Condition: Nagasa (Blade length): 83 cm Mei (Signature): 南海太郎正尊 (Nankai Taro Masataka) Ura-mei (Date): 昭和四十六年八月日 (A day in August, 1971) Condition: The blade is in an excellent, healthy state with a crisp polish. The shinogi-ji is sharp and straight. There are no fatal flaws (kizu), open seams, or active rust. Hamon & Kissaki: The hamon is a beautiful, active suguha based wave with rich nie activity. The kissaki (point) is pristine, razor-sharp, and the geometric yokote line is perfectly intact. Koshirae (Fittings): Tsuba: A gorgeous, heavy iron mokko-shaped tsuba featuring a highly detailed Dragon (Ryū) motif, fitted with copper sekigane. Tsuka: The tsukamaki (handle wrapping) is a striking two-tone weave in immaculate condition, sitting tightly over high-quality, large-nodule samegawa (rayskin). Menuki / Fuchi-Kashira: The gold-gilded menuki complement the dragon theme beautifully. The fuchi and kashira are deeply engraved with a crisp geometric maze/sayagata pattern. Saya: A flawless, deep high-gloss black lacquer (kuroro) finish, completed with an elegant silver-toned openwork kojiri (end cap) for protection. This is a turn-key collectible package that requires absolutely zero restoration. Perfect for both discerning collectors of modern Gendaito and appreciation of fine Japanese art. Price: € 6.500,- Location: Netherlands, Europe Shipping: Worldwide shipping available via secured/insured courier. Free shipping within the EU Payment: Bank transfer or PayPal (buyer covers the 4% G&S fee). Please feel free to PM me for any questions or if you need specific additional pictures. True, looking at proportion of entire blade nagasa is an around 66cm „gunto” (1971-shinsakuto 新作刀 ofcourse) „fitted with copper sekigane” - I don’t see nothing like sekigane at the seppa dai area.
