pcfarrar Posted Thursday at 06:23 PM Report Posted Thursday at 06:23 PM (edited) Kai-awase Sukashi Iron Tsuba with Gold Inlay - Higo Kamiyoshi School An elegant sukashi iron tsuba depicting two interlocking shells (kai-awase), the classic motif of the matching-shell game once favoured by the samurai class. The design appears in the Kamiyoshi tsuba ehon and is traditionally ascribed to the third Hayashi master, Tōhachi. This particular example can be confidently attributed to the second Kamiyoshi master, Fukanobu (1798–1851), on the basis of the characteristic small indented punch marks at the top and base of the nakago-ana. He was the son of Kamiyoshi Jubei (1766-1820) and father of the celebrated Kamiyoshi Rakuju (1817-1884) The iron is of high quality with a deep violet-black patina typical of a Higo school. 6.72cm x 6.53cm x 0.49cm $500 + shipping at cost.
