Higo tsuba sukashi pine tree design. Tsuboi were an offshoot Higo school who catered for less fortunate samurai, they used designs of the main schools. They were very skilled artisans but never able to step out of the shadow of the main schools.

7.1 x 7.3 x 0.4cm

In custom fitted box with an NBTHK Hozon Paper to Higo Mumei Tsuboi (無銘 坪井)

The same design of this tsuba is in Ito Mitsuru's book - see photo (left being the book example).

It's described as follows: "Within the Hayashi school, this kind of sukashi in the form of a pine with kebori illustrating its needles are called " gokai matsu " - five storied pine. .... this tsuba shows very conscientious workmanship"

$700

As a previous owner of this tsuba (although over a decade ago) - it still brings a smile to my face :)

Good quality, especially at this price!
