Sam Smith Posted February 11 Report Posted February 11 13 minutes ago, PNSSHOGUN said: Thank you, JOHN! I'm sorry, I didn't see this post. Actually, many years ago, I had heard about the counterfeit products made in China that almost obtained an appraisal certificate from NTHK. This might be a successful version. It seems that in the past few years, Japanese counterfeit merchants were accustomed to applying for appraisal from ordinary institutions like NTHK. This rather strange Kikusui emblem and the inconsistent inscriptions make it hard for me to believe that it is genuine. 1 Quote
When Necessary Posted February 11 Report Posted February 11 17 minutes ago, PNSSHOGUN said: The sword in question sold at auction for a rather eye watering sum, no doubt helped by the NTHK papers. Some don't hold any organisation in particularly high regard when it comes to Gendai, as there have been many cases of rather suspect swords receiving papers in the past. Perhaps there was other supporting provenance we are unaware of that unequivocally proves this was owned by Captain Ariga.... https://www.invaluab...df2322bbd8796b8eddf2 There is further discussion here: Interesting John! I agree about papers for gendai blades being unreliable and personally I feel that, if there was corroborating evidence for this being the captain's sword, it would've been sold (or at least mentioned and referenced) at the same auction. Once again, I see the signature clearly intruding into the mekugi-ana and the other John (@John C) pointed out at the time how clumsily the kiku was engraved. Regardless of its paper and how much it went for, I would say that this is a fake. 3 1 Quote

The prototype of this sword was made by his student yasunori. After the war ended, it was seized by the US military and brought back to the United States. Later, a Japanese sword seller bought it from the US and returned it to a shrine. The shrine also issued a thank-you letter. At the same time, he took a photo with this swordsmith and discussed the making process of this sword. Attached are the photos, hoping they will be helpful to you 1 Quote
