  1. I couple more pics to judge from would be great. Some more clear/close up of nanako and dragon. Made to look in style of Goto school is my first impression. Probably a later Edo or Meiji piece. These are not uncommon and can look quite fashionable at first glance.
  2. A Ko-shoami, possibly Muromachi tsuba Iron, sumiiri-mokkōgata tsuba with images of warabi (ferns) in the four corners of the tsuba in sukashi. The design is an old one dating from Jomon times, and represents a fern just as it emerges and unfolds, symbolizing spring, life, rebirth. The shape and thickness makes this an interesting tsuba. Possibly Ko-Shōami. Hitsu-ana might be a later addition? If a later addition this may indicate this is an older tsuba: circa Muromachi. Number "146" written inside nakago-ana indicates this tsuba have been part of a museum- or large collection. Mei/signature: Mumei School/province: Possibly Ko-Shoami Period/age: Early Edo or possibly Muromachi Measures: 6.95 cm x 6.80 cm x 0.25 cm Certificate: No Included: NO kiri box included Asking price: $545 or best offer + shipping https://tsubashi.com...bly-muromachi-tsuba/

I am quite stuck on this one to narrow it down further and this is the reason that I reach out here to see if one of our many knowledgeable migt be able to come up with more information... https://blog.goo.ne....0a692bf724625ef222bd https://blog.goo.ne....0a692bf724625ef222bd

  6. Thanks for your replies... I am asking because my knowledge about Nishiaki tsuba isnt exactly great. I have been wondering in first hand, if this tsuba belongs to Nishigaki... or perhaps Akasake or something else… However, I found that I decided towards Nishigaki (Kanshiro?) as I noticed/discovered it seems to be a trait on Nishigaki tsuba to be carved into the nakago-ana/seppa-dai area (as marked on picture attached). I do not find this trait on any other tsuba I can find... This I found interesting in studying this tsuba... I also from my own study feeling this is a late generation Nishigaki... There were 9 generations, if I am right... @Curran Thanks for giving me your opinion. I agree in full with you that tsuba is worn and gold looks like something that is added later and not very well-done. The thickness however have not been striking me as unusual. Question Questions are: Do you see tsuba from other schools than Nishigaki with this trait? Possible to say which generation? ... And now, from info above, could this be an earlier/middle generation that is some abused and with gold added later - or just a later generation? Any info/opinions are of course welcome.

  18. Daisho set, signed Kaneuji Dai: Iron, nadekaku-gata, image of willow with phoenix in gold inlay. 19. Superb Masakiyo tsuba in pristine condition Iron, maru-gata, sukashi of cherry blossoms and waves inside of rim embellished with gold inlay. Two hitsu-ana. Masakiyo (civilian name of Takabayashi Isagi) was born in Shizuoka in 1929. This tsuba is a revival style of the Higo masters. The iron, the design, the execution, and the state of preservation are all superb. Few examples of this smith’s work are in existence today. A superb and beautiful tsuba in pristine condition. I think the quality, condition, the signature, and the subject matter (Sakura – cherry blossoms) makes this an attractive piece. Very elegant, and very reminiscent of the best Higō works. This would have no trouble papering to Hozon, or even Tokubetsu Hozon despite the recent vintage of the tsuba.
