Thank you both for your inputs. I was able to get a few pictures of the nakago. I will be attempting to figure out what/who these mean in the next few days.

I collect WWII items and have decided i would like to add a Japanese sword to my collection. The one i am looking at right now is simply listed as a "Japanese military sword," and is claimed to have been kept in an attic for many years. From my research i believe it to be a type 98 officers sword and to me, it looks genuine but that's purely based on an hours worth of googling. I know the extent some people go to in order to create fake firearms and i assume people would do the same with swords. I Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you for your time.
