JPB Posted July 19 Report Posted July 19 Hello I know that the Kumagai school Edo Higo works in Tokyo, sending their tsubas to the Hosokawa in Higo. I would like to know if a branch of the family works in the Province of Higo ? I read somewhere they were one of the secondary group working in that Province. Is that true ? Thans a lot. JPB Quote
Kiko Posted July 29 Report Posted July 29 (edited) Hello Jean Pierre, I wonder if that "somewhere" might be this page about the 1964 exhibition "Arms and Armor of Ancient Japan: An Historical Survey": https://drdeanhartley.com/ColHartley/Oriental/ArmsAndArmor.htm If that is indeed the case, I suspect there is an error in the wording within the "Other Higo schools" chapter, because everything seems to indicate that the known representatives of the Kumagai 熊谷 "family", originally from Sendai and having entered the service of the Hosokawa household, worked only in Edo, in the Yotsuya district. Furthermore, in the few signatures I have seen, the mention 肥後 (Higo) is not accompanied by the character 住 (jū) which would indicate a residence and therefore seems to refer only to their affiliation with the Hosokawa and the metallurgical tradition of the Higo. JPB Posted August 8 Author Report Posted August 8 Hello Nicolas Thank you for your answer. I don't remember where I saw this, but mistakes in the old texts are numerous. Your explanation is crystal-clear. The absence of the character "ju" is a conclusive clue. Thanks again Jean Pierre B. Quote
