Good evening all,

I was hoping that you could help me with some information on a tsuba that was part of a bundled deal.

To me it looks like kinko tsuba with a lion and dragon with a waterfall in the background, on shakudo plate, with gold inlay - near mint from the looks, I would guess 18th - 19th century. It doesn't show any signs of being pressed that I can tell. Decent detail in my very novice opinion. Parts of the shakudo are starting to show wear which seems to indicate use or poor storage practices. In no way trying to draw conclusions of this being a "battle piece" or anything like that.

Similar tsuba that I have found on the commercial links range from $1,500 to $500, although my lack of knowledge in this area does not give me the needed foundation to say why.

I apologize for the poor photos, but an unsteady hand and an iPhone are not a good combination.

Also - Please know that my intention - eventually - will be to sell this. I am not a tusba collector and have no grand desires to be.

Nagoya-mono, ca 1800. See attached description by Haynes:

'The type of tsuba seen in lots 17 and 18 are often misconstrued. They are early examples of Nagoya-mono tsuba. They are not Ko-Mino and date ca. 1700 to 1750. See the example in Compton, sale II, lot 125, a signed example. The plates are not true shakudo, but katsushirome, or yamagane, black lacquered to resemble shakudo, but without any gold in the alloy. Despite this dealers and collectors are willing to pay prices many times their value.'
