I went to see it last Thursday, speechless. Nothing to add. Never seen its like, even the Stilbert Museum in Firenze .... IT MUST BE SEEN

I must say "chapeau" to Thierry for the quality of his pictures. I have been twice to see this exhibition and each time I took picture - a complete dead loss !!

Here you can clearly see the renovation work on the front of the helmet (compare with the same picture in the saporta catalogue).

Uwe, its not the worse thing in the world having more than one image available of the same rarely seen item, with all the thousands of people taking pictures at this exhibit there will only be a handful of pictures ever made public.

it`s a very rare example of an Myochin school menpo. The catalog mentioned it as "the only one of its kind on record" this time.

The mouth part looks detachable for use when not in battle conditions. Some special order for a bushi who was paranoid in having his mouth pierced, after seeing it happen, maybe? John

yep, it`s a detachable Hana-no-ita (nose plate), there the gusari is mounted. I wonder how the Kuchi (mouth) guard (gusari) is fastened on the men. If this is not the case, it would be useless for protection :?

Uwe, I don't think the mail is attached to the men itself. It is very heavy mail and I think it just hangs from the nose piece. My guess is that mail is very near rigid and just hangs over the mouth opening. You do wonder why it was made. Obviously a very special commission .

I can't tell for sure, but could the piece covering the mouth be a solid pierced plate instead of mail, with wire woven through it, similar to Shingen style tsuba?

I can confirm that this is solid chain mail that is attached permanently around the mouth of the menpô (the nose is therefore no longer removable).

Someone who was afraid of the dentist !!

I just received the catalogue from Amazon. It is a huge bargain at about $42. Wonderful photos good essays and excellent printing. I highly recommend it.
