David Flynn Posted September 7, 2011 Report Posted September 7, 2011 It all depends where the money Lies. When one takes into consideration the hassles and costs of sending swords to Japan, no wonder there are many who would take shortcuts. The cost of sword restoration was extremely expensive years ago. Although inflation has helped a little, I still believe one doesn't get real value for money by sending swords to Japan. P.S. I'm not condoning amateur polishers. Quote
David Flynn Posted September 7, 2011 Report Posted September 7, 2011 Just a further note. A case in point is holding shinsa in other countries. Quote
cabowen Posted September 7, 2011 Report Posted September 7, 2011 Of course it is cheaper for collectors if they can submit to a domestic shinsa done by experts from Japan. I have also, on several occasions, brought professional craftsman from Japan to the US for 3 month stays to do restoration work, saving people time, money and some hassle. The problem with this is few craftsman I have found are willing to be away from home for 3 months and all that entails, nor is the yen -dollar conducive to this sort of arrangement at present as they still need to be paid their home rate. The money saved from postage, import/export, insurance, etc., is not all that great in comparison to the restoration costs with the yen up 40% vs the dollar in the last few years.... Quote
Jean Posted September 8, 2011 Report Posted September 8, 2011 Yes, Yen is tremendously high Chris, it seems to never stop. The Japanese Sword market is still in the US. Quote
runagmc Posted September 8, 2011 Report Posted September 8, 2011 I wonder who makes more off the sale of swords right now, the craftsmen or the sword dealers? Also, the Japanese craftsmen would be doing alot better if so many of us collectors weren't so poor. I wish I had a couple hundred thousand extra laying around that I could spend on shinsakuto and mukansa polishes, but... Lets face it, too many of us only have enough money for the necessities... and swords are no longer a necessity. BTW, no need to thank me for brightening up the mood Quote
Jean Posted September 8, 2011 Report Posted September 8, 2011 You are right Adam, very depressing. On TV every night ... Quote
chrisf Posted September 8, 2011 Report Posted September 8, 2011 Nip out for a bottle of absinthe and get Edith Piaf on the turntable Jean, that'll cheer you up! Quote
Jean Posted September 9, 2011 Report Posted September 9, 2011 Sorry Chris, I can't as I am on diet, no more than one bottle of wine per meal, and absinthe as Pernod, Ricard, Pastis, Anis ... are spoling the wine taste ( ) Quote
