Scogg Posted October 25 Report Posted October 25 It was one of the few that others had flagged as a fake, but maybe I hastily moved it. What do you think @Bruce Pennington @Brian? Quote
Scogg Posted October 25 Report Posted October 25 My take: Fittings look potentially real to me, maybe late war and lower end. I don’t like how the signature looks and lack of yasurime (at first I thought it was cut in with a dremmel, but now I see tiny chisel marks), maybe it’s one of those showato chippy signatures? The blade appears to have had an amateur restoration and/or been chemically treated. We can move it again if necessary; but this is not a sword that I would aspire to own. -Sam Quote
Conway S Posted October 25 Report Posted October 25 The mei looks like it was done with an electric engraving tool. Just look at how many small strokes there are in each character. I believe whoever made this was trying to pass this work off as one by a well known Edo period smith - Kunikiyo. 1 Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted October 25 Report Posted October 25 I think you're right, Conway. The blade looks Japanese. Very faint 'feather' yasurime visible on the undated date side if you zoom in. Highly buffed, acid washed. The fittings look like late war, low quality stuff, and the mei .... I have seen discussions of legit old blades with ugly mei, so I know they exist, but we'd need some of the nihonto guys like @Ray Singer to give us a look. When you zoom in, you can see the mei was chiseled in with many small taps. 1 Quote
Rawa Posted October 25 Report Posted October 25 Double habaki. Overall nice "pimp my blade" academy. Quote
Scogg Posted October 25 Report Posted October 25 I see the yasurime now. Where is my coffee Thanks for the input guys, -Sam Quote
Brian Posted October 25 Report Posted October 25 Look at the mei and the shinogi line in the nakago. I would still call fake. If not...then the whole nakago was ground down poorly and a new poor mei added. Not something anyone would want to own. 1 Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted October 25 Report Posted October 25 39 minutes ago, Brian said: mei and the shinogi line That's a good point. Can't say I've ever seen a legit mei placed with the shinogi running smack through the center. Certainly a little overlap, but not like this. Quote
