A brief note on his credentials: Shigetsugu is PROVEN to have forged swords commissioned by the Japanese Emperor as gifts for, among others, the German dictator Adolf Hitler and the General and 26th Prime Minister Tanaka Giichi. Ikkansai Kasama Shigetsugu was one of the most outstanding swordsmiths of the Taisho and Showa eras. He was born on April 1, 1886, in Shizuoka. His real name was Kasama Yoshikazu. He began his career as a swordsmith in 1899, studying under his uncle, Miyaguchi Shigetoshi. In 1903, he moved to Tokyo to study under Morioka Masayoshi and entered the Tokiwa-Matsu Token Kenkyu-sho. In 1932, Shigetsugu became a master blacksmith of the Nihonto Tanren Denshusho in Akasaka, Hik.rwa-cho, on the estate of Kurihara Hikosaburo (alias Akihide). Kurihara Hikosaburo was a member of the National Diet, an amateur swordsmith, and a promoter of Nihonto. Shigetsugu had numerous students, some of whom were honored with the designation "Ikkansai" or "Tsugu" in their names. Among his outstanding students were Miyairi Akihira, who was later designated an "Important Intangible Cultural Property" (better known as a "National Living Treasure"), and Tsukamoto Okimasa, who became his son-in-law. He later forged swords at the forge on the estate of Toyama Mitsuru, a renowned swordsman of his time and founder of the Black Dragon Society. In addition to being a master swordsmith, Shigetsugu was a master at carving horimono. He worked primarily in the Bizen style of swordmaking. Shigetsugu died in 1966 at the age of 80. Numerous Shigetsugu blades received high origami ratings from both the NBTHK and NTHK. This sword features Nthk origami. The sword is signed and dated on the tang in soshu: Kasama Ikkansai Shigetsugu Hachiman Daibosatsu Showa 12 (1937), in the 8th month (August), on an auspicious day Hachiman Daibosatsu: Hachiman 八幡 is one of the most well-known Japanese deities (kami 神). In the late 8th century, Hachiman received the Buddhist epithet daibosatsu 大菩薩 (Great Bodhisattva). This makes him a representative example of kami created or significantly shaped by Japanese Buddhism. At the same time, he is the ancestral god of both the Emperor's house and numerous warrior dynasties, and in this role, he also mutated into a prominent war god from whom people hoped for luck in battle. Since the Edo period at the latest, however, a large number of simple village shrines have also been dedicated to Hachiman. Even during the Edo period, Hachiman was one of the most widespread shrine deities in Japan. After the Meiji Restoration (1868–1912), the veneration of Hachiman received a new impetus, namely for a military purpose. Various shrines were elevated in status, and schoolchildren and recruits were sent on excursions to pay homage to Hachiman's shrines. Thus, before World War II, Hachiman became more of a national war god than he had been before. ----------------------- Please see the images for dimensions. Untouched!!!
