JeanEB Posted May 19 Report Posted May 19 Hi, I recently came across some unusual papers on a supposed shrine blade. I was hoping I could ask the group for help with translating them as google translate's abilities seemed overwhelmed Thanks a lot in advance Quote
ROKUJURO Posted May 19 Report Posted May 19 It's about a RAI KUNIMITSU blade. ORIGAMI from 1997. Quote
JeanEB Posted May 20 Author Report Posted May 20 I’ve never seen supposed juyo origami with that appearance, how likely is it to be legit? Quote
SteveM Posted May 21 Report Posted May 21 It is "juyo", but its not from NBTHK. This paper is from the Bijutsu Nihontō Shinsa Kai (Art Japanese Sword Appraisal Organization), one of the 2nd tier groups that started issuing papers after the NBTHK scandal of the late 70s. Their "juyo" is not to be confused with (or compared with) the juyo papers issued by NBTHK. 2 Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted May 21 Report Posted May 21 Heisei 6 = 1994 Interestingly, there seem to be some small differences (e.g. length 71.2, vs 71.3) between the original handwritten assessment and the later transliteration, especially the last line. Could they not read the hand writing, or was it merely a formalization of the language used? Quote
JeanEB Posted May 21 Author Report Posted May 21 Thank you for the explanation Steve. I guess I'm wondering what the reliability and reputation of the organization is, whether they're known to egregiously inflate the attributions of the swords they are evaluating and how do they compare to the NBTHK/NTHK Quote
SteveM Posted May 21 Report Posted May 21 I know next to nothing about this particular organization, except that they no longer exist as a going concern, and that nobody in Japan regards these certificates as having any authority. As I mentioned in another thread, I have no reason to doubt any particular appraiser's judgment, but on the whole these 2nd tier appraisal groups are not held in high regard. If you haven't already read the article concerning "green papers", it's well worth your time. The papers in this thread are a different kind of green paper, but the same principles apply. 1 Quote
