Mark Posted August 9 Report Share Posted August 9 A rare Showa tanto from a famous swordsmith. Pictures should show condition. It is a blade and habaki, no other mounts. cutting edge 7 5/8" overall 10 7/8". Gold foil habaki. I believe it is dated Showa 4 or 1929 (before the Yasukuni Shrine was formed) Miyaguchi Toshihiro / Yasuhiro, (1897-1956) On December 23, 1932 the board of directors of the Yasukuni Shrine approved the establishment of the “Nihon To Tanren Kaji”. Toshihiro was summoned and given the smith name Yasuhiro July 8th, 1933 by the war minister “Araki Sadao”. He was then appointed in charge of the Yasukuni Tanren Kai Foundation, he is also listed as one of the Founders. In 1933 he began producing swords at this well known, and prolific school of sword smiths. He worked at the Yasukuni shrine until 1936, where he produced approximately 500 swords. He the mei of “Miyaguchi Toshihiro” and “Miyaguchi Ikkansai Toshihiro” before entering the shrine and when making swords privatly.
