Koto Katana Mumei attributed as Yamato Senjuin NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon in Shirasaya, end of Kamakura period (early 14th century), Tanobe-sensei Sayagaki

A beautifully made katana attributed as Yamato Senjuin end of Kamakura period. The sword is about 700 years old and it is a Masterpiece.

Among the five Yamato schools, this sword has the characteristics of Senjuin.

The blade is a masterpiece. Thare are many stunning works in the Hamon.

The Kamakura period. Blade length is 2 Shaku 2 Sun 8 Bu.

Written by Mr. Tanobe.

The blade was recently polished. There is a superb polish now.

Jigane :Itame hada well grained with jinie attach and chikei work and nice utsuri appears.

Shinogi-ji: Itame hada well grained which looks typical Kamakura jigane. Shinogi-ji is decorated by some Muneyaki.

Hamon :Gunome midare is mixed with Nie deki suguha based and Koashi is mixed with Tobiyaki. In the blade, fine sunagashi and kinsuji work actively. Bo-shi is Midarekomi style with hakikake, double hamon on one side and Tobiyaki on the other side.

At the foot of Mt. Wakakusa in Nara, there is a Senjuin temple dedicated to Senjuin Kannon, and the sword makers that existed here are said to be the Senjuin school. It is said that there were two sword smithes, Yukinobu and Shigehiro, at the earliest in the 5 Yamato school in the latter half of the Heian period.

This sword is a work of Yamato around the end of the Kamakura period, about 700 years old. Despite of its oldness, this work has only one Mekugi ana.  There are many hataraki in the blade. Bo-shi is also a masterpiece which makes you feel fierce. Especially there are splendid freely changing patterns in the blade and Mr. Tanobe sensei’s Sayagaki describes the same content. When you keep the sword in hands, you can see and feel its oldness and fierce spirit of the time, when the sword was build. It is a valuable piece that hails us from from early 14th Century, from the time, when Kamakura Period ended  and time of Nanbokucho Period was approaching in Japan.

Personal Comment: If I see the sword properly lighted, I feel like I'm looking into a deep universe with many stars and nebulae. A combination of rich tobiyaki, utsuri and chickei is truly amazing to behold. It is a great nearly 70 cm long sword from Kamakura times with a fierce look and with a valuable Saygaki written by Tanobe-sensei.

I believe and hope that this sword will become a family heirloom for centuries to come.

Registration: Mumei, 17.11.1973, Kumamoto

Unfortunately, my photos do not catch beauty of the hamon works and reflections. However, you can see at least a hint of the beauty that an ancient swordsmith brought to this sword.

There are uploaded 3 original images from Japan 1.jpg, 2.jpg, 3.jpg on the link above. They were taken before the final fine polish, the other ones are after the final polish. Unfortunately, I do not keep equivalent images taken after the final polish. There is generally no first look difference in between images 1, 2, 3 and the other ones, the sword looks the same, but there are no soft scratches on the blade on the later images and the jigane and hamon are clearly visible. Kisaki is also newly polished and shows its beauty really well.

Please, feel free to contact me with any your questions, requests or proposals concerning this item. I always do my best to reach a mutual satisfaction.

The sword may be inspected and picked up in Prague, Czech Republic. Please, contact me for this option.

I ship the sword within 1-3 days to all EU countries, but please, allow about 3-4 weeks for shipments out of EU. There is necessary to get an export permission in advance and it takes about 3 weeks.

There is my wanted price € 13500 plus PayPal and shipping costs. There is prefered bank to bank transfer, which is free. If there is paid by PayPal, I will request to get payment in CZK (as per the actual CZK / EUR exchange rate).

I forgot to state Kissaki Nagasa: about 3 cm.

I actually offer this high quality Kamakura Senjuin sword with beautiful and unique hamon details for €12.500, the other terms as above.

As I see there are still no potential buyers for the price announced, the price for forum members dropped to €11500, the other terms remain as above stated. I hope this price starts to be interesting, it is under the original price which I paid for the sword in Japan years ago. On the top, the sword has got an expensive very high quality new polish in the meantime.

I lower the price again... I did not want to offer this old beautiful sword with rich hamon works for this price, because I deeply believe this sword deserves higher evaluation.. :(
Anyway, there is a new price for the members of this forum €11000 (or CZK equivalent, if paid by PayPal), plus shipping fees and plus PayPal fees (bank to bank transfer is free of charge, of course). I hope this lowered price along with actually a bit stronger yen helps.
