Authentic tachi ?

Recommended Posts

Good morning,

Here are some photos of a sword in tachi mounts from an upcoming sell. Any idea on the interest of this sword ? Cannot see much of the blade, I have asked for more especially on the kissaki and nakago but not sure I will receive it before the sell. It looks to be in poor conditions. Blade is said to be 29" long, total 41" for the sword.

Tsuba looks lovely with masts in front of Mont Fuji, but I am more surprised by what looks like to be a sort of leather strap on tsuka. Is is possible on an old sword ?

As John said, who knows what could be hiding under there.... The full shape and Nakago are needed to determine if it's a Tachi. The mounts do look to be of decent quality from those photos.

Thanks for advice, that's what I think too. It may not be expensive at all, as I am interested by tsuba and as other mounts may be interesting too I could give a chance to this sword, no matter what is hiding under there if it stays not so expensive.

That looks a really sleepy and interesting sword with nice “samurai taste” iron mounts. I’m not so sure re the possibility of hagire. If you enlarge the last image there are three parallel lines at right angles to the edge and two of them look as if they may emerge from small edge chips. Possible choji hamon peeping out at us? The tsuka wrap is also good quality…possibly leather or lacquered doeskin. I would certainly take a chance on it on the basis “hope for the best but prepare for the worst”.

Dear Alban.

To answer your question about the tsukamai then yes indeed it might be lacquered leather, or lacquered fabric or even paper.  Many different materials are used, personally I find the style on this sword attractive.  If you are interested there is quite a bit of information on tsukamaki on this site, http://www.tsukamaki.net/

All the best.
