Late war sword handle translation

Pippo,

the script may not make much sense. It looks as if someone had tried to "renovate" some faded characters, but a look at the NAKAGO and the blade would allow an assessment whether this is a Japanese blade at all. The mounts do not look Japanese to me, but the blade makes the potential value.

Looks like two names written on the handle, but its hard to say

1. 伊ト囗囗 Ito-something, but its not one of the normal ways to write "Ito", and the characters after that are illegible to me.

2. 北村囗囗 Kitamura something.

Both Itō and Kitamura are very common family names in Japan.

Yes ive being telling him to bring in sword so i could check it over as told him it either very late war or a hand made regional copy his father/ grandfather picked up in the war. But script is obviously Japanese and all hed given me so thought id see if someone could read incase it revealed any clues.

Thankyou SteveM for your help
