Jesper
Dear all, I would like to ask about the use of a mon showing a fence (Magaki) in a ring. I have traced it to the Ooka clan in Iwatsuki / Iwaki in Musashi. It is however not the main mon of the clan. I have gathered information on the Ooka clan but have not succeeded in finding information about this particular mon. I would be grateful for information about the use of it, which daimyos or sub-lines of the clan used it, where and and when, etc. Thank you in advance. With best regards, Jesper

SteveM
Not ”magaki”, but "tamagaki" (玉垣). Or, Ōoka-tamagaki (大岡玉垣). Or, hosowa-ni-tamagaki (細輪に玉垣) Tama means jewel, but in this case the "jewel" is a Shintō shrine, and this fence represents the typical fences surrounding these shrines. I can't find any family other than Ōoka. The crest carries their name, so the association must be particularly strong. Attaching some sources, which you may have already referenced. https://kamon-db.net/portfolio/ookatamagaki https://books.google.com/books?id=adJJm_PdEGMC&pg=PA103&lpg=PA103&dq=大岡玉垣&source=bl&ots=wzDItFda2c&sig=ACfU3U2sJ82rNO8TWFwTLDXSDsC6hWd-5A&hl=ja&sa=X&sqi=2&ved=2ahUKEwil0ervpZv3AhVcG7kGHT0rDX8Q6AF6BAgPEAM#v=onepage&q=大岡玉垣&f=false https://kisetsumimiyori.com/kakine/

John A Stuart
The family has a cadet branch in Iwatsuki also within Musashi-kuni that has a different kamon, sangai-bishi perhaps? Traditional family kamon is shippo shape. There was branches in Kamo, Hoi, Ichihar, Kazuza,, Omi and Koza in Sagami. Confusing yes?
