Motohara Evolution Blades

Hallo guys. What is your opinion about Motohara Evolution Blades ?

Are they more like nihonto than other swords outside of Japan ?

And one more question - where I can buy nihonto for around 5K$ ?

I cannot answer the first two questions for you, but I can answer the last one. You can definitely buy antique nihonto for 5k plus or minus right here (under the "For Sale" section or on dealer sites listed at the top under "Nihonto Info -> Links -> Commercial #1-4".

And just to precaution you, the stance of this community here is to strongly discourage using antique nihonto for martial arts. Indeed, I don't know of any proper dojo that will encourage someone to use antique either. Modern-made cutters generally outperform and are much more economical to use! Not saying you were planning on using one for that purpose, but clearing that up, you'll be much more likely to get some offers here.

It will also help if you let us know what you're looking for! Age, length, school, condition, papers, etc. 5k can cover a wide variety of possibilities, so the more details of what you're looking for, the easier it is for your search to be narrowed down to a specific blade!

You can buy a genuine Japanese sword (shinsakuto) off the secondary market for that.

Can I use it just for iaido or this is not OK too ?

Most definitely not a good idea. Not only will you get bad looks from folks here, and instructors elsewhere; but it is an actual safety concern. Traditionally made nihonto most often have flaws as part of their production process and those flaws can be entirely unseen, buried under the surface of the metal. If the blade fails, it could seriously maim or even kill. With modern-made blades, there is a lesser chance of this. Also, you wouldn't be ruining an art-piece by using a modern-made blade.

You should buy a Paul Chen blade, I've heard good things about them for iaito! Or a similar blade like the Motohara you've mentioned.

Ok, thank you. I ordered motohara and  I'm waiting to be send to me. I've been dreaming for a long time to have real Japanese katana. I search for nihonto 2.55 shaku and I'll not use It for practice!

But Motohara is not a real Japanese katana. Made in Korea.

To clarify, I mean do not use ANTIQUE nihonto. Modern made can be traditional or foreign made. And Brian is correct, Motohara is not Japanese nor traditionally made.

I think he meant that he ordered a Motohara for practice and is looking for a nihonto for collecting.

 

Very good choice. Evolution Blades is well known and make good practice swords. You can get them from $2k.

I know the owner of Evolution Blades well. They are definitely the best non-traditional option for serious martial arts use available today. They’re not cheap, but eventually if you are a serious student Hanwei/Paul Chen/etc. simply won’t cut it (no pun intended). 
 

As others have said, you should be able to assemble one for less than $3k as long as you don’t go crazy with the fittings. 
 

But the overall quality is excellent, including assembly and finishing. I strongly recommend these blades for those who cannot afford or do not want to use a shinsakuto. 
 

Evolution Blades can customize every aspect of the blade if you are qualified to make such decisions, and they offer a good variety of steels to choose from. Most “off the rack” factory made blades have extremely bad proportions and balance, making them a poor training tool.

Yes, I ordered motohara SGT steel for iaido practice because unfortunately I can't afford shinsakuto. Do you know if I can find shinsakuto second hand somewhere? I just need to be 2.55 shaku for iaido practice. Unfortunately I don't practice tameshigiri because here in Bulgaria there is no tameshigiri dojo but some day really want to try if I can find sensei to teach me.
