Surrender Sword with Certificate

Thought I would show this sword which came via a local dealer from the family of the owner of this sword who proudly displayed the sword under its certificate for years ...

The sword shows it as been used during the War the wrap as gone like leather and the rank tassle as seen better days.

The steel saya as some battle damage and the sword hanging chain was attached to the sword and wrapped up in the linen bag.

I believe the blade is a oil quenched blade the handle was stuck tight on the tang and when I eventually removed it a large amount of debris fell out of the handle !!

This sword is totally untouched and as never been cleaned the tsuba is the early cut out version ..

What a nice find!  Nice Gunto in good condition, family mon in silver, chain hanger plus the documents bag, pierced tsuba and sakura latch, nice looking same and sarute, and all the associated British badges. 

 

What do you see in the blade?  I am guessing that it's not signed?

No Geraint can’t see any signature the tang is heavily corroded with dark rust .

The sword and the bits came locally from Bridgend..

What I like is the condition of the sword a true been there veteran if it could only talk !!!!!

For an oil-quenched, it is a very handsome blade I think!

Very nice Gareth,  I'm thinking a Type 94 (pierced Tsuba, central chuso, solid and quality fittings and same) cant see whether sarute is barrel type though.

Something to note is the top part of the Ashi is missing. The Tsuka-Ito looks particularly well done, is there any wring on the top of the handle under the Fuchi?

Regarding the blade I was informed on anothe forum the blade looks like it was oil quenched ?

Being new to collecting swords any information will be gladly appreciated .

I really like this sword plus the bonus of the certificate makes it for me .

Yip, likely oil quenched. This is the less risky method of quenching used on Showato/arsenal swords that are not fully traditionally made. Water quenching mainly used on Gendaito.
But looks like a decent example.

Hash marks on nakago are the modified Roman numeral system with "\" being "5", so \III is "8", therefore "88" which matches the number on the tsuba.
